Dear Mr. Keiser:

The Commission has issued the enclosed exemption from certain requirements of Section 50.71(e)(4) of Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations (10 CFR 50.71(e)(4)) regarding submission of revisions to the updated final safety analysis report (UFSAR) for the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit Nos. 1 and 2. lri its letter dated December 2, 1998, the Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) requested an exemption from the requirement that revisions to the UFSAR must be filed annually or 6 months after each refueling outage provided the interval between successive updates does not exceed 24 months. Specifically, this exemption allows PSE&G to submit the updates of the UFSAR, which is common to both units, within 6 months after the Salem Unit 1 refueling outages, but not to exceed 24 months from the last update rather than annually or within*6 months after each refueling outage for both units.
