Dear Mr. Keiser:
In a [[letter::LR-N980345, Requests Use of Portion of 1992 Edition of ASME Boiler & Pressure Vessel Code Section XI (IWA-4500).During Tenth Refueling Outage,Feedwater Nozzle Insps Will Be Performed & Weld Repair on SG Feedwater Nozzles May Be Required|letter dated July 16, 1998]], the Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) requested, pursuant to the provisions of 10 CFR 50.55a(g)(5)(iii), to use an alternative to the requirements of the 1986 Edition of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)
Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code (Code) at Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit No. 2.
Specifically, PSE&G requested to use an alternative welding process as provided in ASME Code,Section XI, Article IWA-4500, 1992 Edition, for the potential repair of the steam generator feedwater nozzles. The feedwater nozzles will be inspected during the next Salem Unit 2 refueling outage, scheduled to start in April 1999.
The NRC staff has reviewed PSE&G's request and has concluded that, pursuant to 10 CFR 50.55a(a)(3)(i), the use of the gas tungsten arc welding process as provided by ASME Code,Section XI, Article IWA-4500, for the potential repair of feedwater nozzles is authorized. This alternative provides an acceptable level of quality and safety.
