Mr. Harold W. Keiser Executive Vice President Nuclear Business Unit Public Service Electric and Gas P.O. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038

Dear Mr. Keiser:

May 13, 1998 This letter is in response to a request from Mr. Carey of your staff for statistics on allegations received by the NRC concerning Salem and Hope Creek. The attached tables provide a comparison to allegations received at other operating sites for calendar years 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997 and the first four months of 1998. You may notice changes from statistics previously reported. The software used to count allegations has been revised to avoid "double counting" allegations that are transferred from one NRC organization to another. Additionally, the data is audited for accuracy and corrections are made as appropriate.

If either you or Mr. Carey have any questions concerning the data, you can reach me at (301) 415-8529.
