SALEM UNIT 1 AND UNIT 2 SENIOR REACTOR OPERATOR INITIAL
EXAMINATION REPORTS Nos. 50-272/98-02 COL} AND 50-311 /98-02 COL}
Dear Mr. Keiser:
This report transmits the results of the operational portion of the senior reactor operator
(SRO} licensing operations examinations conducted by NRC examiners during the week of
January 26 - 30, 1998, and the written examination administered by your staff on
January 23, 1998, for the Salem Nuclear Facility, Units 1 and 2. Based on the results of
the examinations, all seven SRO applicants passed the operating portions of the
examinations. One SRO applicant did not pass the written portion of the examination. At
the conclusion of the examination, Mr. L. Briggs discussed the preliminary observations
with Messrs. Robertson and Nichols and other members of your staff.
These examinations addressed areas important to public health and safety and were
developed and administered under Interim Revision 8 to the Examiner Standards (NUREG-
1021 }. All segments of the examination were developed by Salem and their contractor
personnel, while the NRC provided oversight and final approval prior to the administration
of the examinations. Salem training personnel subsequently administered the NRC
approved written examinations, while the operating examinations were administered by the
NRC.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2. 790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice,"* a copy of this letter
and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
