SUBJECT: COMBINED INSPECTION REPORT NOS. 50-272/97-20 AND 50-311 /97-20
Dear Mr. Eliason:
On November 13, 1997, the NRC completed a safety inspection of your Salem 1 and 2
nuclear facility. The enclosed report presents the results of that inspection.
The inspection found that sufficient attention was given to questions regarding the proper
method for calculating primary containment average air temperature. However, the
calculation that justifies the current averaging method did not contain complete technical
bases for some of its conclusions. This issue was unresolved pending your evaluation of a
recent containment air temperature survey.
In accordance with 10 CFR 2. 790 of the NRC's "Rules of Practice," a copy of this letter
and its enclosures will be placed in the NRC Public Document Room.
