SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION RETAKE EXAMINATION REPORT
NO. 50-272/97-13 (OL) & 50-311/97-13 (OL)
Dear Mr. Eliason:
On May 29, 1997, the NRC administered a simulator retake examination to one employee of
your company who had applied for a license to operate the Salem Unit 1 & 2 station, but had
failed the simulator portion of his first examination administered during the week of
January 6, 1997. The simulator retake examination was developed by the Salem Unit 1 & 2
training department, utilizing the guidance of NUREG-1021, "Operator Licensing Examiner
Standards," Rev. 7 and Generic Letter 95-06.
The results of the examination indicated that the Senior Reactor Operator (SRO) candidate
passed the exam; however, a license will not be issued at this time. Since both Salem units
have been shut down for an extended period of time, the candidate was unable to perform at
least five reactivity manipulations on one of the operating units, but he was still permitted to
sit for the exam. Therefore, pending the startup of one of the Salem units, his SRO license
will not be issued until he has performed at least five reactivity manipulations.
