Public Service Electric and Gas Company Louis F. Storz Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-5700 Senior Vice President - Nuclear Operations JUN 1 2 1996 LR-N96150 LCR S96-04 United States Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 SUPPLEMENT TO ORIGINAL REQUEST INCORPORATION OF 10CFR50 APPENDIX J OPTION B SALEM GENERATING STATION NOS. 1 AND 2 FACILITY OPERATING LICENSES DPR-70 AND DPR-75 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 Gentlemen:

This letter transmits Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G)

Company's response to your request to clarify, in the marked-up Technical Specification pages, that the submitted change to containment leak rate testing utilizing Option B applies to Type A testing only.

These changed pages are attached.

A new paragraph, specification 4.6.1.2.a, describes Type A testing only, utilizing Option B.

The phrase "in conformance with Appendix J of 10CFR50, Option A" has been added to specifications 4.6.1.2.b and 4.6.1.2.c to clarify that the Type B and C tests will continue to be conducted utilizing the original (Option A) criteria.

In addition, the phrase "as modified by approved exemptions" has been added to 4.6.1.2.a as a suggested enhancement.

Since this wording is consistent with the intent of the original submittal to utilize Option B for Type A testing only, there is no change to the basis for the requested change or to the 10CFR50.92 evaluation presented in the original request.

Should you have any questions regarding this revision, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.
