20555 Gentlemen:

SEVERE ACCIDENT MANAGEMENT SALEM AND HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATIONS DOCKET NOS. 50-272, 50-311 AND 50-354 The Nuclear Energy Institute's (NEI) Strategic Issues Advisory Committee, approved a formal Severe Accident Management industry position on November 4, 1994.

That position was communicated to the Director, Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation, in a letter dated November 21, 1994.

Each licensee was required to: assess their current capabilities to respond to Severe Accident conditions using Section 5 of NEI 91-04, Revision 1, 11 Severe Accident Issue Closure Guidelines," and implement appropriate identified improvements, within the constraints of existing personnel and hardware, on a schedule not to exceed December 31 1 1998.

Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) intends to implement the NEI industry position as described in NEI 91-04, Revision 1.

PSE&G will complete its assessment of Severe Accident Management capabilities, and implement any identified enhancements by December 31, 1998.

Please note that PSE&G operates a multi-vendor site (Westinghouse and General Electric),

and that the implementation schedule complements ongoing efforts to address the Individual Plant Examination of External Events (IPEEE)
