DEC 2 91994 NLR-N94232 U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20SSS Gentlemen:
REACTOR COOLANT PUMP MOTOR LUBE OIL COLLECTION SYSTEM SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 In response to your request during a telephone conference between USNRC Region I, NRR and Public Service Electric and Gas Company (PSE&G) on Thursday, December 22, 1994, we hereby provide our:
Engineering evaluation of the reactor coolant pump lube oil collection systems installed at our Salem Generating Station (see Attachment 1),
Determination that two specific locations on the reactor coolant pump lube oil systems are not credible potential leak sites and, therefore,* not out of compliance with 10 CFR SO, Appendix R,Section III. 0. (see Attachment 2), and Confirmation that the above evaluation and determination are applicable to both Salem Units.
To ensure that a plug at one of the above specific locations remains a
non-credible potential leak site, we have issued administrative guidance to appropriate maintenance personnel to preclude disturbing the plug.
We are evaluating more permanent methods (to be implemented in the next refuel outage for each unit) to ensure the plug remains intact and undisturbed.
We are confident that our currently installed reactor coolant pump lube oil collection systems at Salem Generating Station meet the requirements of 10 CFR SO, Appendix R.
