Dear Mr. Miltenberger:
SUBJECT:
SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NOS. l & 2 AND HOPE CREEK GENERATING STATION; RESPONSE TO NRC BULLETIN 93-02, "DEBRIS PLUGGING OF EMERGENCY CORE COOLING SUCTION STRAINERS" {TAC NOS. M86610, M86611, M86571)
This letter acknowledges receipt of your response dated June 10, 1993, to NRC Bulletin 93-02, "Debris Plugging of Emer~ency Core Cooling Suction Strainers."
The bulletin was issued May 11, 1993, to all nuclear power reactor licensees.
It requested licensees to identify fibrous material in the primary containment, take any necessary compensatory measures, and remove any such material.
Your response stated-that fibrous filter material, such as described in the bulletin, was identified as being installed in the Containment Fan Coil Units {CFCUs) and the Containment Iodine Removal Units
{CIRUs) in the Salem l and 2 containments. However, you determined that the
- fibrous filter material was adeq~at~ly contained within the CFCUs and CIRUs and the material would be highly unlikely to be dislodged in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident. Therefore, the material was left in place.. No fibrous filter material was found stored in either of the Salem containments.
For Hope Creek, your response stated that no fibrous filter material, such as.
described in the bulletin was identified as being used or stored in the containment.
Based on the above discussion, we consider your actions for Salem l and 2 and Hope Creek, to be complete.
Please retain any records of your aGtions in response to this bulletin, as subsequent inspection activities may be conducted in regard to. this issue.
Should you have any questions, please contact me at {301) 504-1419 or the Lead Project Manager for this issue, John B. Hickman, at {301) 504-3017.
