Stanley LaBruna Public Service Electric and Gas 1Company P.O. Box 236, Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038 609-339-1700 Vice President - Nuclear Engineering OCT 261993 NLR-N93144 U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Document Control Desk Washington, DC 20555 Gentlemen:

10 CFR 50, APPENDIX R INSPECTION -

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION ENGINEERING EVALUATION OF CONTROL ROOM EVACUATION FOR FIRE-INDUCED MOV HOT SHORTS AS DISCUSSED IN NRC INFORMATION NOTICE 92-18 SALEM GENERATING STATION UNITS 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 During the Salem Appendix R Inspection, conducted from May 17, through May 21, 1993, an issue was raised pertaining to Salem's response to NRC Information Notice 92-18, "Potential for Loss of Remote Shutdown Capability During a Control Room Fire".

As part of a teleconference on June 3, 1993, PSE&G committed to provide a formal response to that issue.

Although PSE&G maintains that the concerns of Information Notice 92-18 extend beyond the original Salem design requirements for post-fire safe shutdown capability, the attached Engineering Evaluation demonstrates that existing plant component and system redundancies at our Salem plants satisfy those concerns.

This evaluation serves to reenforce our confidence in our ability to safely shut down the plant from outside the control room in the event of a fire.

Should you have further questions on this matter, we will be '

pleased to discuss them with you.

sincerely, Attachment r--. 9--3 ---. - --OJ 0 0 0 b I
