FIRE PROTECTION DOCUMENTS FOR SALEM GENERATING STATION, UNITS 1 AND 2 As discussed with Mr. M. Alpaugh of your staff on April 6, 1993, and subsequent
- discussions with your staff, we have scheduled an inspection at your Salem Nuclear facility for the week of May 17 - 21, 1993. The purpose of this inspection is to determine whether the licensee has a functioning configuration management program with respect to post-fire safe shutdown capabilities and_ whether the licensee has properly maintained the post-fire shutdown capabilities achieved during the initial validation inspection.
In order for us to conduct this type of comprehensive inspection, we will need to review, in adv~ce, documents concerning the 10 CFR 50, Appendix R and fire protection programs.
Please provide us three sets of the following documents. One. set is to be sent to the NRC/Region I, ATTN: Mr. R. Paolino, 475 Allendale Road; King of Prussia, PA 19406.
A second set of documents is to be sent to Brookhaven National Laboratory, A TIN:
Mr. K. Sullivan, Building 130; Upton, NY 11973. The remaining set should be sent to NRR/HQ, ATTN: Mr. P. Madden, (OWFN8Dl), *11555 Rockville Pike; Rockville, MD
. 20855. These documents should be in the receptionists possession one (1) week prior to start of this inspection.

with respect to those plant systems required to achieve and maintain safe shutdown conditions from inside and outside the control room, the fire protection programs and its implementation, and the electrical and systems aspects of the Appendix R analysis, should be available at the site during the inspection.
