FARLEY NUCLEAR PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2, AND VOGTLE ELECTRIC GENERATING PLANT, UNITS 1 AND 2 -WITHDRAWAL OF PROPOSED ALTERNATIVE GEN-ISI-ALT-2017-01, IMPLEMENTATION OF CODE CASE N-786-1 (CAC NOS. MF9936, MF9937, MF9938, MF9939, MF9940, AND MF9941; EPID L-2017-LLR-0058)

Dear Mr. Hutto:

By letter dated July 3, 2017 (Agencywide Documents Access and Management System (ADAMS) Accession No. ML17184A184), Southern Nuclear Operating Company, Inc., (SNC, the licensee) submitted proposed alternative GEN-ISi-ALT-2017-01 for the Edwin. I Hatch Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, Joseph M. Farley Nuclear Plant, Units 1 and 2, and the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant, Units 1 and 2. SNC proposed to utilize American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Code Case N-786-1, "Alternative Requirements for Sleeve Reinforcement of Class 2 and 3 Moderate Energy Carbon Steel Piping Section XI, Division 1,"

to repair defects in ASME Code Class 2 and 3 moderate energy piping without removing the existing defect by installing sleeves around the piping, thereby, restoring structural integrity and/or leak tightness to the degraded pipe.

By letter dated April 9, 2018 (ADAMS Accession No. ML18099A346), SNC requested to withdraw GEN-ISi-ALT-2017-01 due to the issuance of a rule amending Title 10 of the Code of Federal Regulations, Section 50.55a, that approved ASME Code Case N-786-1 for unconditional use. This letter acknowledges the withdrawal of GEN-ISi-ALT-2017-01.

No further NRC staff review will be performed under CAC Nos. MF9936, MF9937, MF9938, MF9939, MF9940, MF9941, and EPID L-2017-LLR-0058.
