Docket Nos. 50-272

50-354

Mr. Steven E. Miltenberger

Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer

Public Service Electric and Gas Company

P.O. Box 236

Hancocks Bridge, NJ 08038

Dear Mr. Miltenberger:

r:c1 t 7 1~3

SUBJECT:

SALEM AND HOPE CREEK RESIDENT INSPECTION NOS .. 50-272/93-01;

50-311/93-01; 50-354/93-01

The enclosed report documents an inspection conducted to assure public health and safety,

conducted by Mr. T. Johnson-Senior Resident Inspector and other members of the NRC

resident and regional staff, at the Salem and Hope Creek Generating Stations for the period

between January 3 and February 6, 1993. The inspectors discussed the findings of this

inspection with Messrs. V. Polizzi and R. Hovey of your staff .

Within the scope of this inspection, our inspectors found that the Salem and Hope Creek

Generating Stations were safely operated and maintained. We noted strong operational

performance at Salem in the response to, and followup of, activities associated with the

manual reactor trip of each unit. However, weaknesses were identified in the Salem

engineering and technical support area relative to estimated critical position calculations on a

startup of Unit 1 and troubleshooting activities affecting the 2C emergency diesel generator.

These issues are unresolved and will be reviewed during a future inspection. No reply to

this letter is required.

Your cooperation with us is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Edward C. Wenzinger, Chief

Projects Branch No. 2
