An announced* safety inspection *of the* radioactive waste handling, storage, processing, .and

transportation programs* at the. Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating* _Stations was

co11ducted by Mr. R. L. Nimitz during the period December 8-10 and 17, 1992. The.findings

of _the inspection were <l:iscussed with Messrs. _V. Polizzi an~ M. Prystupa and other members

of your staff on December 17, 1992.

. Areas reviewed during the inspection were important to health.and safety and are fully discussed *

in the enciosed inspection report. The areas reviewed were organization and staffing; training *

and qualifications; procedures and records; 10 CFR Part 61 analyses; and radioactive was~

handling, storage, processing, and transportation~

The inspection identified* that generally very good radioactive. waste .. handling, storage,

. processing, and transportation programs were implemented at the Salem and Hope Creek

Stations. The programs were generally well managed with a good level of technical expertise

available to support these programs. However, several areas for improvement were identified .

. These areas were. improvement in the definition and consolidation of the training program for

corporate support personnel, improvement in. documentation and. review of entrance and exit

• radiation surveys of radioactive waste sµipments, and improvement in quality assurance of

computerized radwaste shipping paper documentation~

There were two unresolved items identififd. Th~ first involved paining, :relative to IE Bulletin

79-19, of contractor personnel operating liqriid radioactive waste systems at.Salem. The second

involved hazardou~ material training of personnel relative to Subpart H of 49 CFR 172. TheSe

items are further discussed in the enclosed report. These items will be reviewed during a futiire

inspection .
