Docket Nos.: 50-272 50-311 50-354 UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION I 475 ALLENDALE ROAD KING OF PRUSSIA, PENNSYLVANIA 19406-1415 DEC 0 9 i~92 Mr. Steven E. Miltenberger Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer Public Service Electric and Gas Company P. 0. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038

Dear Mr. Miltenberger:

SUBJECT:

1993 NRC EROSION/CORROSION WORKSHOP We appreciate your decision to participate in the 1993 NRC Erosion/Corrosion Workshop.

The workshop is scheduled to be held in Region I on February 9, 1993. The objective of the workshop is to address current erosion/corrosion (EC) issues by promoting industry, NRC, and research orga, nization discussions in regard to EC in high energy, carbon steel piping systems.

We would also like to invite members of your staff to participate in the workshop. The morning of the workshop will be divided into a number of talks by industry, NRC and EPRI members relative to the implementation of EC programs by industry licensees. The afternoon of the workshop will allow participants to attend one of three discussion -groups (breakout sessions). The breakout sessions cover the following areas relative to implementation of EC monitoring programs: A) EC monitoring program scopes, including methods for selecting systems and components for inspection, B) practices for inspecting carbon steel components, and C) methods of evaluating inspection data and dispositioning results. The discussion groups will present their-findings to-the collective-workshop audience at the end of the breakout sessions. Final concluding remarks will be made by industry and NRC members at the end of the workshop program.

Your talk, tentatively scheduled for 10:15 AM - 11:00 AM, is intended to provide the utility perspective of how implementation of programs designed to monitor erosion/corrosion in carbon steel systems is proceeding, and give a common basis for understanding program strengths and shortcomings to date. Based on your experience with the implementation of the erosion/corrosion program at your facilities, we invite you to stimulate NRC and industry representatives to discuss controversial topics during the workshop.

DEC 09 8 Mr. Steven We request that you inform us of the estimated number of your. staff who wish to attend the workshop by January 6, 1993, and update the number of participants by January 20, 1993. Also, please indicate the names of those attending the workshop and their personal preference for the afternoon discussion groups. A form is enclosed which may be used to ease your efforts. Please fax this form to Mr. Al Lohmeier at (215) 337-5320 or mail the form in to Mr. Al Lohmeier at the address listed on the form.

Also enclosed is a tentative schedule for the workshop on February 9, 1993. We will advise you of the workshop location in the near future. Should you have any questions or comments, please contact me at (215) 337-5359 or Mr. Al Lohmeier at (215) 337-5089.
