Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 Dear Mr. Miltenberger: SUBJECT: SALEM UNIT I INSERVICE INSPECTION PROGRAM, STEAM GENERATOR EDDY CURRENT EXAMINATION AND EROSION/CORROSION PROGRAM REGION I INSPECTION REPORT NO. 50-272/92-08 This refers to the inspection intended to promote public health and safety conducted by Mr. P. Patnaik of this office from May 26-29, 1992, at the Salem Nuclear Generating Station Unit 1 in Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey. Mr. Patnaik discussed the findings with your staff on May 29, 1992, at the conclusion of the inspection . This inspection included a review of the inservice inspection program of the reactor coolant system, t~e eddy current examination of steam generator tubes and the erosion/corrosion monitoring for the high energy piping system. These are all important aspects of maintaining pressure boundary integrity. Based on the results of this inspection, the erosion/corrosion program was found to have a significant weakness regarding the engineering evaluation and disposition of degraded components found during examination. This appeared to be a deviation from your commitments in the Final Safety Analysis Report (FSAR), as specified in Appendix A, Notice of Deviation .
