Dear Mr. Miltenberger:
MAY 2 81992
Subject:
NRC Combined Inspection 50-272/92-06; 50-311/92-06; 50-354/92-07
Ari unannounced inspection of the radiological controls program at the Salem Nuclear Generating
Station was conducted by Mr. R. L. Nimitz during the period April 28 - May 1, 1992. The
findings of the inspection were discussed with Mr. C. Vondra and other members of your staff
on May 1, 1992.
Areas reviewed during the inspection were important to health and safety and are fully discussed
in the enclosed inspection report. The inspection principally focused on the adequacy and
implementation of radiological controls for the Unit 1 refueling outage. Also reviewed were*
several previous findings~ in the area of contamination controls and dosimetry processing, that
affected both the Salem and Hope Creek Stations.
Regarding Unit 1, the inspection identified that generally very good radiological controls were.
implemented for the on-going outage and that commendable dose reduction initiatives were
implemented. However, there were some weaknesses in attention to industrial safety matters
identified at Unit 1 which were corrected when brought to your staffs attention. Regarding
matters which affected the site, excellent efforts were on-going to enhance dosimetry processing *
. and control to address self-identified weaknesses.
Al~, overall controls for radioactive and
. contaminated material appeared good but we noted that an independent review of several*
"
instances of contaminated material or contamination found outside your radiological controlled
area was on-going during the inspection. The results of this review will be examined during a
future inspection.
Within the scope of this combined inspection, no violations were identified.
