A routine, unannounced inspection of your radioactive waste collection, handling, storage
and transportion programs was conducted at the Salem and Hope Creek Nuclear Generating
Stations by Messrs. J. Noggle, J. Furia and R. L. Nimitz during the period May 13-17, 1991.
The findings of the inspection were discussed with Mr. S. LaBruna on May 17, 1991.
Areas reviewed during the inspection are discussed in the enclosed inspection report.
Within the scope of this inspection, one violation of NRC requirements was identified which
rela:ted to radioactive material shipment activities at Salem Nuclear Generating Station. The
violation involved one example of failure to verify, in accordance with 10 CFR 30.41, that
a byproduct material licensee was authorized to receive the radioactive material that was
transferred to them. The violation is discussed in the enclosed Appendix A, Notice of
Violation. The inspectors identified good efforts to reduce the volume of radioactive
material shipped off site for. burial.
You are required to respond to the enclosed Notice of Violation and should follow the
instructions contained therein. Your cooperation with us is appreciated.
