Gentlemen:

Subject:

Inspection Report Nos. 50-272/91-07 and 50-311/91-07

This letter refers to the routine safety inspection of the station fire prevention

and protection program.

This inspection was conducted by Mr. R. Paolino of

this office on February 20-22, 1991 at the Salem Generating Station, Units 1

and 2, located in Lower Alloways Township, New Jersey, of activities authorized

by NRC License Nos. DPR-70 and DPR-75.

The results of this inspection were

discussed with Mr. S. La Bruna and other members of your staff at the conclusion

of the inspection .

Specific areas examined during this inspection are identified in the report.

Within these areas, the inspection consisted of selective examinations of

procedures and representative records, interviews with personnel, observations

and verification df completed related activities; including surveil1ance,

testing, and maintenance of fire protection equipment; brigade training,

drills and documentation.

Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were noted; however, we

accordance with your administrative procedures.

In view of the fact that we

issued a citation in the February-March 1990 time frame for a similar condition,

we request that you provide us with the status of your corrective actions that

would have precluded the recurrence of this condition.

Further, you are requested

to evaluate the findings of this report regarding the control of combustibles

and* provide us with your assessment and any corrective actions that may be
