STATUS OF RADIATION MONITORING SYSTEM UPGRADE PROJECT SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 This letter is an update per PSE&G letter dated February 12, 1991 regarding the status of the Radiation Monitoring System (RMS)

Upgrade Project.

The technical scope of the project has been detailed in a Project Scope Proposal (PSP).

The RMS Upgrade Project will provide both Salem Units with a new computerized radiation monitoring system.

The approach will require the removal of existing equipment and installation of new equipment in its place.

The initial effort will be focused on the radiation monitoring equipment that actuates ESF systems.

This effort will ensure that there will be a significant reduction in inadvertant safety system operation.

The remaining effort will be phased over several refueling outages.

Due to the financial magnitude of this modification the change to the RMS requires the approval of Senior PSE&G Management and the Co-Owners of Salem before the modification can be implemented.

This approval process is underway and we will update you on the status of the approvals and the final schedule for the project implementation during the month of June, 1991.
