Subject: Combined NRC Inspection Nos. 50-272/91-01; 50-311/91-01; 50-354/91-01 ,
This letter transmits the findings of the routine, resident safety inspection conducted by Mr. T.
Johnson and others from January 1, 1991, to Febniary 12, 1991, at the Salem and Hope Creek
Nuclear Generating Stations. The findings were discussed with Mr. S. LaBruna and Mr. J.
Hagan of your staff.
. Within the scope of this inspection, the inspectors identified two non-cited violations as detailed
in the report. These items involved failure to (1) maintain the auto-start capability for the Motor
Driven Auxiliary Feed Water pumps on loss of Steam Generator Feed Pumps (Salem Unit l);
and (2) perform Diesel Generator Operability Checks within the specified surveillance period
(Scilem Unit 2). In these instances of noncompliance we exercised our discretion and refrained
from issuing a Notice of Violation since these items exemplified your initiative for self-
identification and correction as described in Section V.G of the NRC Enforcement Policy.
Consequently, no reply to this letter is required.
