ENCLOSURE Drop-in Visit from PSE&G Vice Presidents On September 17, 1990, Messrs. Steven E. Miltenberger, Vice President and Chief Nuclear Officer and Stanley La.Bruna, Vice President-Nuclear Operations representing PSE&G visited the NRC Region I office on short notice. They met with Mr. T.T. Martin, Regional

  • Administrator, and Messrs. W.F. Kane, A.R. Blough and P.D. Swetland of the Division of Reactor Projects from 2:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. Mr. Miltenberger had requested the visit to ensure that the Region is well informed with respect to activities at the Artificial Island complex. The status of the following areas was discussed.
1.

Scheduling of PSE&G and NRC safety system functional inspections (SSFis) -

PSE&G has not volunteered to host an NRC sponsored SSFI. PSE&G has ongoing internal SSFis in which NRC may participate.

2.
  • Organizational Changes - PSE&G briefed NRC on planned management and organizational changes to improve site performance.
3.

Salem Material Condition - PSE&G discussed plans to increase the productivity,

of their "Material Upgrade Program."

4.

Cooling Towers for Salem - PSE&G discussed the fact that the State of New Jersey recommended that cooling towers be installed at the Salem facility.

5.

Hope Creek Status - PSE&G provided a summary of recently completed performance assessments at the Hope Creek facility.

6.

Overview of site improvement activities - PSE&G discussed their basis for

  • judging the success of current plant improvement efforts.

No substantive technical, licensing or unresolved items were resolved, and no commitments were made.
