Gentlemen:
Subject: NRC Combined Inspection Report No. 50-272/90-25; 50-311/90-25
A routine radiological controls inspection was conducted by Messrs.
R. L. Nimitz and R. H. Lance, of this office, at the Salem Nuclear Generating
Station on October 22-25, .1990. * The findings of the inspection were discussed
with Mr. V. Polizzi on October 25,
1990~
Areas reviewed during the inspection included licensee actions on previous NRC
findings, external and internal exposure controls, preparation for the upcoming
outage, r~dioactive and contaminated material controls, and worker concerns .
Within the scope of this inspection, no violations were identified. Posting of
radiologically controlled areas was good, however, weaknesses were noted in the
barricading of these area~. Housekeeping appeared to be good.
The inspection
identified that effective planning for the upcoming outage was being performed
to control occupational exposures as low as reasonably achievable (ALARA).
Evidence of smoking and .eating in the radiological controlled area was
identified.
Our review of the worker .concerns indicated that an acceptable evaluation of the
concerns was performed by your staff and that acceptable corrective actions were
taken to address revision of completed radiation surveys and voiding of
radiological otcurrence reports (RORs).
Further, the actions taken to provide
additional management attention to the review and resolution of RORs were noted.
Continued attention to ensure the effectiveness of the corrective actions is
encouraged.
In addition, improvement in the review of completed radiation
surveys appears warranted, as well as improvement in the guidance to technicians
regarding the extent of surveys needed to clear an area as non-contaminated.
