VACUUM BOX TEST

. All welds in the bottom and all welds in the cylindrical shell that ti ave backed-up joints shall be tested us:i ng a -vacuum box* and solution film b~fore the test channels are installed.

The pressure.in the va~uum box shall be evacuated to at lea~t 5 psig* pressure differentia1 with atmos~heric pressure.

When impracticil to ~acuum box test, a liquid penetrant (Fuel Oil) shall be used.

This is done by applying fuel oil to one side of the welded seam, waiting a period of time, and observing the.other side of the weld for indications of*bleed through.

LEAK TEST The welds shall be*covered by test channel~ as indicated on the *draw-ings.

Prove the.strtictural adequacy of th~ test*chanriel welds, using the piping arrangement shown on Sketch A.

This *is accomplished by closinq. valves aA, "B", and "C" and opening valves 11 0 11 and "E~

Then slowly open valve "C" and pressurize the test channel to 54 psig with air.

Close valve 11 C 11 and.hold fo~ 15 minutes. *Then

.slowly open v~lve *s 11 and reduce the pressure.to 47_.psig~

Open valve 11 A11 and pressurize.the test channel with refrig-erant to 10 psig (about 20% by weight) and then close val~e

Slowly open valve "C" and raise the pressure to 47 psig.

Close valves "C" and 11 0 11 and open Valve "B".

Test the channel to liner plate weld joints with a Halogen Leak Detector (General Electric Type H-2 or equal) at a probe rate of about 2-1/2 feet/minute.

The probe nozzle must be within 1/2" of the weld while testing for leaks.

The sensitivity of the

. leak detector shall be tuned to the maximum stable sensitivity at the start of a testing period.

The sensitivity shall also be checked5every two hours using a calibrated leak of at least 1 x 10-std. cc/sec.

If any leaks are found, release the pressure through valve "B" (by opening Valve"D") and the exhaust I

to exhaust the Halogen-air mixture to an area outside the area to avoid contaminating the testing area with Halogen Repair the leaks found and retest the section.

At the successful completton of the Halide test of the test channel section, open valve "D" and exhaust the Halogen-air mixture through the exhaust line to an area outside the testing area to avoid contamination.

Purge the refrigerant from the test channel section by closing valve "B" and slowly opening valve "C".

Pressurize the channel to 40 psig, close valve "C" and open valve "B".

This should be done a minimum of 5 times.

The test channel zone shall be held at 47 psig pressure for a period of two (2) hours.

A pressure loss of 0.5 psi is acceptable.

B.

If the pressure loss is greater than 0.5 psi after correct-ing for temperature change, the holding period may be in-creased for a longer period of time to average or stabilize the test conditions.

C.

If the pressure loss is in excess of the allowable stated in Step SA after performing Step SB, retest the channel section and test connections with solution film and/or the leak detector.

If any leaks are found, release the pressure to O psig, repair the leak, and retest.

All test channels at the penetrations and access openings to receive similar tests.

Several penetrations may be manifolded

- together for testing.

The number of penetrations manifolded

- together will be at the discretion of the test personnel in order to perfo~m an efficient and thorough job of leak testing.

Caution must be exercised in making the test connections in the manifold assembly to eliminate leaks.

The testing assembly and the manifold assembly shall be leak tested before start of test.

The hose used for pressur1z1ng the test channels must be free of standing water.
