Alleged Intentional Damage to Safety Related Equipment at Salem Generating Station Unit 1 This refers to the telephone conversation between Mr. P. Swetland of this office, and Mr. J. Zupko of your staff, held on October 29, 1987.
On October 21, 1987 it was alleged to the NRC that piping associated with the charging/safety injection system may have been intentionally damaged to discredit the contractor working on modification/repairs to associated pipe supports. It was further alleged that this damage may have been caused by another contractor.
In addition, it was also alleged that contractor quality control inspectors for the pipe hanger repairs identified an unusu~~ly high rate of rejection for these repairs in order to increase their work load onsite.
We understand that you are already investigating the-damaged pipe incident.
The information received by NRC has been made available to your staff through the NRC resident inspector. It is requested that, following your investigation, you provide a written response to this office summarizing your findings and make your investigation records available to the resident inspector.
The response directed by this letter is not subject to the clearance procedures of the Office of Management and Budget as required by the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1980, PL 96-511.
