This refers to the routine resident safety inspection by Mr. T. Kenny and

Mrs. K. Gibson, of this office, on July 21, 1987 to August 24, 1987, at the
Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey.
The inspec-
tion consisted of document reviews, interviews, and observation of activities.
The findings were discussed with Mr. J. M. Zupko, Jr. of your staff.
Your
staff should be commended on the prompt reporting and conservative approach
to resolving the safety concerns regarding the recent reactor head leak and
boric acid buildup on the reactor head and studs.

This letter also acknowledges receipt of your response dated August 14, 1987,
to the violations cited in Inspection Report 50-272/87-08 and 50-311/87-09.
Your response will be reviewed in a future inspection.
Your corrective actions
for violation 50-311/87-18-01 have been reviewed and found acceptable as dis-
cussed in Section 2 of the attached report.
Within the scope of this inspection no violations were observed.
No reply to this letter is required.
