Dear Mr. McNeill:
Reference a. transmitted sixteen changes to the Salem Generating Station Units 1 and 2, Quality Assurance (QA) Program Description, in accordance with 10 CFR 50.54(a).
Initial review by the NRC Region I staff identified a need for fur-ther clarifications in the following areas: (1) Training of visual inspectors performing In-Service Inspections, and (2) Review of procedures by QA.
These areas were discussed with C. Johnson and W. Schultz of your organization during a telephone conversation on October 4, 1985 and the requested clarifications were provided by you in Reference b.
Based on the initial review and a review of the additional information provided in Reference b, the Region I staff conclude that these program changes are ac-ceptable as they do not reduce the commitments of your previously approved Qua-1 ity Assurance Program.
The effectiveness of your QA program implementation will continue to be the subject of routine regional inspections.
