Nuclear Public Service Electric and Gas Co.

P. 0. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038

Dear Mr. Uderitz:

SUBJECT:

CONTAINMENT SUMP TEST ACRS (10)

OELD Section 2.C.(15)(e) of Facility Operating License DPR-75 required that the licensee submit the confirmatory results of the containment sump model test program, along with a description of any sump modifications resulting from this test. This requirement was taken from Supplement No. 4 to the Salem Nuclear Generating Station, Unit 2, Safety Evaluation Report (NUREG-0517).

In accordance with this requirement, you provided the test results and the associated sump modification description via two letters to the NRC dated October 19, 1981 and January 15, 1982 respectively.

The staff has completed their review of the model test results to assure that recirculation through the sump can be reliably accomplished.

Based on this review, we have concluded that there is reasonable assurance that, in the event of a loss-of-coolant accident, the emergency core cooling system pumps will function in the recirculation mode without damage due to air entrainment or vortices, hence the above requirement has been satisfied.

Our Safety Evaluation is enclosed.
