Docket Nos. 50-272 50-311 Public Service Electric and Gas Company ATTN: Mr. R. Uderitz Vice President - Nuclear P. 0. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 Gentlemen:

JUL 5 1984 IE FILE copy.

Subject:

Management Meeting Scheduled for July 19, 1984 This refers to the bimonthly meeting to be held in the Regional Office on July 19, 1984, to discuss your progress in completing the PSE&G Action Plan for Improving Nuclear Department Operations.

The format of this meeting will depart from that used in our previous bi-monthly meetings on the Action Plan. Specifically, over the past few months, we have observed a number of situations at the Salem Generating Station which recall the basic concerns at issue during the Spring 1983 restart deliberations. These concerns include attention to detail, safety perspective, accountability, inquisitiveness, and attitude.

Enclosed is a listing of recent inspection findings, categorized by general areas, which form the basis for our observations. At the meeting, you are requested to outline the features of your Action Plan which, in yo~r view, will address and solve these concerns. The inspection findings are provided as indi-cators of perceived problems in the general areas listed. Discussions should focus on the general areas rather than the specific examples. Following these discussions, we also request a general update on each Action Plan item.

Should you have any questions concerning this meeting, we will be pleased to discuss them with you.

Enclosure:

As Stated Sincerely, O:rigiual S.igned Bi.I_
