OPS~G Public Service Electric and Gas Company P.O. Box 236 Hancocks Bridge, New Jersey 08038 Nuclear Department December 2, 1983 Dr. Thomas E. Murley Regional Administrator U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission Region 1 631 Park Avenue King of Prussia, PA 19406

Dear Dr. Murley:

MODIFICATIONS TO POST ACCIDENT SAMPLING SYSTEM (PASS)

SALEM GENERATING STATION UNIT NOS. 1 AND 2 DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 During telephone discussions with your staff on November 22 and 28, 1983, Public Service Electric & Gas (PSE&G) stated that we intended to upgrade Salem Generating Station's accident sampling capabilities.

To sample the Reactor Coolant System (RCS) at pressures below 50 psig, our current procedures require' a sample to be manually collected from the Residual Heat Removal (RHR) pump discharge.

This process was reviewed and approved in the Office of Nuclear Reactor Regulation's letter dated November 4, 1983.

However, PSE&G has determined that the sampling process at RCS pressures less than 50 psig could be improved and the man-rem could be reduced.

Post accident sampling capabilities will be upgraded by tieing the RHR pump discharge sample lines directly into the permanently installed Post Accident Sampling System (PASS) and thus eliminating the need for the existing system.

The Unit 2 modification will be completed and operable by March 1, 1984 and the Unit l modification will be completed and operable by April 1, 1984.

The above dates reflect not only.. ~the engineering and installation of the system, but also the time required to perform post modification testing, revision of applicable procedures and training of the appropriate personnel.
