10 CFR 50 Appendix R Safe Shutdown Inspection - Salem 1 This letter is to inform you of an NRC special announced team inspection on January 16 - 20, 1984, of the Salem Nuclear Power Station, Unit 1, with regard to 10 CFR 50, Appendix R, Sections III.G and III.L. A pre-inspection meeting is also scheduled at Salem site on December 5 and 6, 1983 for the seven.team members to complete site access training, badging, plant tour, and other preparations for the inspection.

The security clearance information for the seven team members has been forwarded to you under separate cover.

These personnel will arrive on site at 12:00 noon, December 5, for site specific training which should last no longer than two hours, as previously arranged with your staff.

To effectively conduct the inspection, we request that analyses performed by your engineering staff and documentation of all modifications completed to ensure compliance with 10 CFR 50, Appendix R, Sections III.G. and III.L be available at the site during the inspection.

If possible, engineering per-sonnel knowledgeable of your efforts in this area should also be available.

Your staff has indicated that a work location for the team in an area with easy access to the plant drawing files has been arranged.

Additionally, we understand that personnel escorts will be available to allow team members ready access to radiologically controlled areas of the plant.

We also request that you make available a member of your staff at the end of each day to discuss any findings the team may have and to receive requests for additional information to resolve any open issues.
