FIRE PROTECTION RUU:-ALTERNATE SAFE SHUTDOWN CAPABILITY-SECTIONS III.G.3 AND III.L OF APPENDIX R TO l 0 CFR 50-SAEEM-f t:ENERATING STATION, !JM IT~; NOS. 1 AND 2 We have completed our review of the subject as noted above based on your submittals dated September 1981 and in letters dated March 19, August 4 and December 4, l 981..l\\dditional information and cl arificati*6nnwas obtained in a June 16, 1982 response and a December 22, 1982 response to a staff request for additional information. Our enclosed Safety Evaluation incor-porates the technical input provided by our consultant, the Brookhaven National Laboratory. The arternate safe shutdown capability uf Salem Units l and 2~ in the event of a fire, was evaluated against the requirements of Sections !II.G and III.L of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50.
Based on our reviews we conclude that Salem Units l and 2 are in compliance with Title 10 CFR Part 50, Appendix R, Items III.G.3 and III.L regarding safe shutdown in the event of a fire in the relay room, the cable spreading room<';.
or the control room.
The schedule for you to complete required modifications is specified in 10 CFR Part 50.48{c)(4). Compliance with the Fire Protection Rule tidll be the subject of future Commission *nmspections.
