J. T. Beard By letter dated October 21, 1980 from Darrell G. Eisenhut to all operating pressurized water reactor licensees we identified concerns regarding the seismic qualification of 8uxil iary Feedwater Systems (AFW).

A subsequent

,_J Generic Letter No. 81-14 from Mr. Eisenhut p~ovided additional information related to our concerns and requested that each licensee take certain actions and provide certain information related to the AFW system.

You provided the requested information for Salem Units 1 and 2 in your letters of August 11,1981 and March 1, 1982.

We have reviewed this information and have concluded that the AFW system~'.' at Salem Units l and 2 has sufficient seismic capability to withstand a safe shutdown earthquake and accomplish its safety function. Our Safety Evaluation is enclosed Accordingly, we are not contemplating requiring an~ seismic upgrading of this system at ~)ither Unit and consider this action closed.
