Mr. Steven A. Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

LOOSE PARTS MONITORING NO. 1 UNIT SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 This letter transmits to you, in its enclosure, the addi-tional acoustical information related to the metal impacting events which occurred on April 29, 1981 at Salem Unit 1.

This additional information was requested by your April 21, 1982, letter to us.

Also enclosed are two (2) tapes, numbered NRC-1 and NRC-2, containing the recordings of the impacts which occurred ran-domly at Salem 1.

We request that, after completion of your review, they be returned to PSE&G.

Should you have any questions in this regard, do not hesi-tate to contact us.

Very truly yours,

PSE&G letter MR15-0l-A to J. D. Campbell dated May 20, 1982

Dear Mr. Rippe:

On May 20, 1982, a letter was sent to Mr. J. D. Campbell of Westinghouse requesting data concerning metal impacting events which occurred on April 29, 198J at Salem Unit I.

In response to this request, copies of the tapes were shipped via Federal Express airbill number 776532212 to PSE&G.

Also, the requested time and frequency plots of typical metal impacts and tape logs are attached.

The two tapes provided, numbered NRC-1 and NRC-2, contain impacts which occurred randomly in the Salem Unit 1 plant. Since the impacts were random in nature, it is believed they are from some source other than a loose part. Subsequent analysis of tapes made in March 1982 during reactor coolant pump cycling show no impacts at all.

Attachment I contains typicql time and frequency plots of the recorded events, and Attachment 2 contains the data sheets for the tape provided.

The time and frequency plots attached do not help to determine whether or not loose parts exists. They are typical of metal impacts which may occur in any system, but the frequency of occurrence is not periodic.

Impact frequency (rate) is a prime identifier of a loose part.

In the attached plots, both slow and fast rise-time events and impacts which 11saturated 11 the detection equipment are seen.

A spectrum of what may be positively identified as pipe expansion event could not be provided.

June 25, 1982 R. D. Rippe

  • PSE-82-532 Experience to date indicates that the frequency spectra of a pipe expansion would be indistinguishable from a valid impact.

Hence, rate of impacts and knowledge of plant conditions are used to discriminate valid impact events.

We trust this information will satisfy your request. If you have any further questions, please contact me.
