I 80 Park Plaza, Newark, NJ 07101 I 201 430-7000 MAI LING ADDRESS I P_Q_ Box 570, Newark, NJ 07101 February 11~ 1982 Director of Nuclear Reactor Regulation U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission 7920 Norfolk Avenue Bethesda~ MD 20014 Attention:

Mr. Steven A. Varga; Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

MAIN STEAM LINE NOBLE GAS RADIATION MONITORS NO. 1 AND 2 UNITS SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NOS. 50-272 AND 50-311 The purpose of this letter is to provide additional informa-tion concerning the length of outage time necessary to in-stall the Main Steam Line Noble Gas Radiation Monitors in Units 1 and 2 and to request deferment of the completion date for this item on Unit 1.

The Main Steam Line Monitoring (MSLM) System has been pur-chased from Technology for Energy Corporation (TEC).

As the system design evolved; certain changes became necessary which resulted in delaying the delivery of the system by approximately nine weeks.

During the current outage of Unit l; a 3/8" line with a man-ual isolation valve will be tapped into an existing pressure tap off each of the main steam lines~ and a l" line with a manual isolation valve will be tapped into the chilled water piping.

These are the only items which require a unit out-age for installation~ therefore~ the completion of the MSLM System will be accomplished without necessitating additional outage time.

Delivery of the system is scheduled for April; 1982.

Upon completion of installation; a two month checkout and calibration period is necessary.

Based on the above, and the justification for interim operation provided in our letter dated December 7~ 1981; it is requested that the com-pletion date for this item be deferred until August 31~

1982.

95-0942 2/11/82 For Unit 2~ the installation of the MSLM System requires an outage of two weeks to accomplish the work described above.

However~ due to necessary design changes; some of the valves to be installed during an outage will not be delivered until December~ 1982.

This will not delay completion of the sys-tem during the first refueling outage~ as provided in Amend-ment 4 to Facility Operating License DPR-75.

Should you have any questions in this regard; do not hesi-tate to contact us.

Very truly yours, E. A. Liden; Manager Nuclear Licensing and Regulation FAM:ds CC:
