SUBJECT:

REQUEST FOR ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON PHR MODERATOR DILUifIQ~r:

By letters dated February 1, 1978 and April 2~ 1981, you provided, in response to our requests, information concerning the potentia1 for boron dilt:t~.on inci-dents at Salem Unit 1.

In particular, your April 2, 198'1 letter stated that Salem has adopted 11certain operating changes 11 to provide a greater margin of safety in the event of inadvertent dilution; and that Salem is protected against inadvertent dilution in the interim before 11final hardware fixes'" a:re introduced.

The staff is aware of the proposed hardware changes; however, it is our view that an independent evaluation of the Salem Unit 1 status should proceed regard-less of the eventual outcome of the review of these hardware changes.

In order to completa this evaluation, you are requested to provide the additional infor-mation specified in enclosure (1) within 45 days of receipt of this letter.
