Varga, Chief Operating Reactors Branch 1 Division of Licensing Mr. Frank J. Miraglia; Chief Licensing Branch 3 Division of Licensing Gentlemen:

SAFETY VALVE POSITION SWITCHES UNIT NO. 1 AND 2 SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION DOCKET NO. 50-272 AND 50-311 In our March 28; 1980 response to Item 2.1.3.a of NUREG 0578; we committed to install by June 1, 1980 improved switches on the safety valves for Units 1 and 2. Although purchased~ these switches have not been installed yet; due to lack of appropriate documentation concerning their seis-mic and environmental qualifications.

The manufacturer of these improved switches is in the proc-ess of performing the seismic and environmental qualif ica-tion tests; and the estimated completion date is January 1982. As soon as this process is completed and an outage of sufficient duration occurs; we will install the improved switches on the safety valves. We wish to emphasize that the switches presently installed are fully qualified for both seismic and environmental conditions.
