'()... ~51 The Honorable Harrison Williams, Jr.
United States Senate i~ashington, DC 20510
Dear Senator Williams:
Thank you for your letter of March 24, 1981, inquiring on behalf of Eleanor and Alfred Coleman of Pennsville, New Jersey, about the use of microfiche at the Nuclear Regulatory Commiss.ion's {NRC's) local public document rooms (LPDRs).
In their letter dated March 5, 1981, Mr. and Mrs. Coleman made specific reference to the use o*f microfiche at the Salem Free Public Library, the NRC's LPDR for Public Service Electric and Gas Company's Salem and Hope Creek nucle.ar facilities.
As background, the NRC began *es.tab 1 s i hi ng LPDRs in *the vicinity of propo_sed and existing nuclear power plants in 1971 in order that the local populat-ion would have access to docum~nts relating to the licensing, construction, and *operation of those plants *.. The Salem Free Public Library (Salem Library) has--voluntarily served as an LPDR since December 1971, and we are most apprecfatlve *of_t_he cooperation and assistance we receive from this library and others throughout __ the country. At the present time, the NRG collection at the Salem Library--takes up over 50 linear feet of shelf space, a*nd the collection will conti'riue to grow during the operating lifetimes of the Salem and Hope Creek plants.
Because of the volume of the material.) nvo 1 ved ~ the NRC is in the process of providing a micrographic capability to all of the libraries which maintain the document collections. Microfiche reader printers, tables, and storage cabinets have been furnished to 30 libraries, including the Salem Library, and by the end-of the year, a'fl power reactor LPDRs will have--the equipment.
The cost.of this equipment is approximately $2,700*
per library. Without this-.equipment, many of the libraries have indicated that they would be unable to maintain the collections.
We believe that the microfiche will enable the local libraries to more effectively maintain the integrity of. the document collections, will enhance the usefulness of the collections* by the public, and will enable the NRC to make more information, such as.research reports and other generic studies, available to the public.
At the present time, no paper*.copy files have bee.n removed from the Salem Library to make room for the microfiche.
- The library has stored some of the older material in* *the LPDR collection.. because of the shortage of available shelf space; however, this material ~s available to the

public by asking the librarian in charge of the collection.
Even at such time as paper copies of documents are replaced by microfiche, the l ibrarjes will retain at leas~ al 1 files for the current year in paper copy form.
In addition, cert~in documents, such as safety analysis reports and environmental reports, will be maintained in both paper copy and microfiche.
The staff of the LPDR Branch +s available to serve the needs of the public by making NRC documents readily avai_lable and accessible. They are knowledgeable about the document collections, and can provide reference services and on-1 i ne computer-*_searc:hi ng.
The LPDR Branch can be reached on a toll free number recently installed to assist the librarians and their patrons in locating information.
The toll free number is 800-638-8081. They will be pleased to assist Mr. and Mrs. Coleman if they have any difficulty locating docurri~nts.
A staff person from the LPDR Branch is planning a visit to the Salem Free Public Library in the next few_ months.
We will be pleased to contact Mr. and Mrs. Coleman at such time as the dates for the visit are firm.
If I can provide additional i'nformation, please do not hesitate to contact me.*
