UNITED STATES NUCLEAR REGULATORY COMMISSION REGION I 631 PARK AVENUE KING OF PRUSSIA, PENNSYLVANIA 19406 MAR 1 1 1981 Public Service Electric and Gas Company ATTN:

Mr. F. W. Schneider Vice President - Production 80 Park Plaza - 15A Newark, New Jersey 07101 Gentlemen:

The NRC 1s Office of Nuclear Factors Society to evaluate for recruiting and training they will need to visit licensee personnel.

A group of seven persons from the HFS, accompanied by Dr. Harold P. Van Cott, a human factors specialist at the Office of Nuclear Regulatory Research, plans to visit your Salem facility on March 17, 1981.

The objective of this visit is to gather information and obtain understandings; it is not evaluative and is unrelated to the inspection functions of the Office of Inspection and Enforcement.

The team will arrive at about 9:00 a.m. and would like to tour as much of the plant as is practical and accessible, and spend some time observing control room operations.

They will not have time to complete health physics training, and they understand that they cannot be afforded access to any plant area which requires this training as a prerequisite.

The team would also like an opportunity to informally meet with the plant manager and other operations personnel on a 11 not to interfere with normal plant operations" basis.

Enclosed is a list of the personnel expected, with the necessary security access

~formation, and a list of specific topics of interest to them.

Your cooperation in making,optimu_m use of the limited time available for this visit is greatly appreciated.

Please contact me or the resident inspector, who will coordinate on site activities, if you have any questions or if this visit will pose any problem.
