Dear Mr. Mittl:
SUBJECT:
SALEM CABLE TRAY FIRE BARRIER EVALUATION; DOCKET NOS. 50-311/272 To satisfy the cable tray fire protection requirements of Section III.G of the Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50, you have proposed to utilize the 3M fire barrier system.
The fire test for this material/system has been documented in a report provided by you, 11Cable Tray Fire Test - 3M Fire Barrier System 11, dated October 31, 1980.
The fire test was based oh the ASTM E-119 fire test method.
The 3M material tested was compared to Kaowool as a baseline reference, which has been previously approved by us.
We have evaluated your fire test report and conclude that it demonstrates that the 3M fire barrier system exhibits equivalent or better characteris-tics than Kaowool, and therefore can provide an acceptable fire barrier for cable trays and cables. Based on our evaluation, we conclude that the use of the 3M fire barrier system meets the requirements of Appendix R to 10 CFR Part 50 and is acceptable.
