IN-PLANT RADIATION MONITORING QUESTION Describe how post-accident, in-plant, portable iodine sam-pling and analysis systems required by our letter of November 9, 1979, implementing the Lessons Learned item 2.1.8.c of NUREG-0578, will meet the criteria for location in a low background area (e.g., with minimal gaseous radio-activity and direct radiation effects) after January 1, 1981.

Also, describe the remote location of th~ radioiodine counting facility.

RESPONSE

Portable Air Samplers -

A charcoal or silver zeolite car-tridge sampler can be used on a portable air sampler which can be carried around and plugged into an electrical receptacle.

Continuous Air Monitors (CAM's) - These units are on carts with wheels and can be moved to sample different areas utilizing local electrical receptacles, can use charcoal or silver zeolite cartridge.

Portable Geli Gamma Spectrometer -

This analyzer is located in the service building in an area out of the auxiliary building to minimize background effects.

It can be moved to other areas if necessary.

SAM-2's -

3 portable SAM-2's can analyze both charcoal or silver zeolite cartridges at any location.

They are battery or electrically operated and can discriminate for noble gases.
