Summary of shortnose sturgeon captured by the Delaware River Basin Anadrornous Fishery Project............................................. 10 Literature Cited......................................... 11 January 9, 1980 Revised January 21, 1980 soo2040 s-ro Pref ace This paper is presented as a supplement to 1) a Section 7 Consultation by the National Marine Fisheries Service, Office of Marine Mammals and Endangered Species,
~-issued in December 1979; 2) an affidavit by Robert P.
Douglas, of Public Service Electric & Gas Company of New
.Jersey, which discusses design and operation of the Circulating Water System (CWS) intake facility at the Salem Generating Station~ anCT. 3) an affidavit by Victor J.
Schuler, of Ichthyological Associates, Inc., which discusses aspects of the anticipated biology of.the shortnose sturgeon; Acipenser brevirostrum, in the Delaware River Estuary, and references documented and anecdotal captures.
All four sources present information pertinent.to consideration of the potential for involvement, and its significance to the population, of the shortnose sturgeon with the Salem CWS intake.
NOTE':
This January 21 revision incorporates changes in data presented in Table 1 (page 2), Table 4 (page 9), and (page 10) for the years 1973, 1975, and 1977, relevant in data referenced IA Newbold Island and DRBAFP.
These revisions are based on personal communications with Joseph Miller (DRBAFP) and Donald Danila (IA) and are unpublished corrections on data presented in and available to the January 9 draft.

Temporal and Spatial Distribution of Sampling Effort and Description of Gear and Procedure in Artificial Island Ecological Studies 1968-1979 During June 1968 through December 1979, 11,464 16-ft
-=-bottom trawl samples were taken within the Delaware River Estuary by Ichthyological Associates, Inc. (Tables 2 and
.3).
Some 10,096 of these were taken between RM 40-60 (Fig. 1).
In addition, 1,314 sampl~s were taken in ca. 100 randomly distributed zones between RM 0-40 and RM 60-73 during July 1978 through December 1979.
Also, 54 samples were taken in a study of the area near the Cohansey River (RM 30-40) during June-September 1974.
All of these samples were taken with a 16-ft semi-balloon otter trawl of the following dimensions:
16-ft headrope, 19-ft footrope, nets made with nylon netting of the following size mesh and thread:
1 1/2-in stretch mesh No. 9 thread body, 1 1/4-in stretch mesh No. 15 thread cod end, and innerliner of 1/2-in stretch mesh No. 63 thread knotless nylon netting hogtied to the cod end.
Head and footropes were hung on 3/8-in diameter Poly-Dae net rope with legs extended and wire rope thimbles spliced at each end.
Six 1 1/2-x 2 1/2-in Ark floats were hung on the headrope and 1/8-in galvanized chain was hung loop style on the footrope.
Trawl doors used with the above net were 2 ft in length and 1 ft in width, made of 1-in mahogany lumber,
~- x 1/4-in steel straps and braces, 3/8-x 2-in bottom shoe runner.
Doors were set with 2/0 galvanized chain and one 5/16-in swivel at the head of each bridle.
During 1968 and 1969 warp (tow line) length was 50 or 75 ft depending on depth to be sampled.
During 1970 through June 1978 warp length was 100 ft in all except channel zones where warp length was 150 ft.
Beginning in July 1979, coincident with the revision of scope to include population estimation and the expansion of the study area to include the entire Bay and lower River, a 6:1 ratio of warp length to water depth was maintained to better ensure adequate sampling in the deepest waters.
Trawls were hauled at 3-4 knots in the direction of the current.
Hauls were of 10-min duration in all zones except SSC (5 ~in) and the five channel zones (20 min).
In adnition 13 samples were taken with a 25-ft trawl of the same mesh sizes between RM 40 and 60 during 1968 ana 1969.
