Dear Mr. Librizzi:

By letter of January 189 1977 we reouested a detailed evaluation of the potential consequences of a refueling accident inside the containment of Salem Unit f.lo. 1. This information was reouired to document and confirm data that you had previously provided the staff during a preliminary evaluation of these consequences.

The informatio.n that you provided fo your response of March 30~ 1977 indi,-

cated that,. using the assumptions provided in negulatory Guide 1.25~

such an accident would have consequences wft~Tin allowed exposul"e guidelines bf 10 CFR 100.

We have reviewed the information that you provided and have also made an

  • independent analysis of this type of accident.

As the result of this analysi:s~ we have concluded that the consequences are appropriately within the guidelines of 10 CFR 100 and are, therefore~ acceptable. A copy of our Safetv Evaluation is enclosed.
