Dear Mr. Librizzi:
TERA In our letter of August 31, 1978 we requested information regarding pipe cracks in the chemical volume control system of Sal em Unit No. 1 that were caused by excessive charging pump vibrations. This information was required to assist our review of potential correlation of pump vibration and fatigue failure of piping.
You responded to our request by letters dated October 27, 1978 and October 5, 1979.
We have reviewed your current operations practice that includes the use of mechanical dampers on the suction side and discharge side of the positive displacement discharge pump.
As noted in the enclosed Safety Evaluation Report, we have concluded that test data indicate that vibrations have been arrested to an acceptable range.
With maximum stress fluctuation of 300 psi in the normal operating mode, fatigue failure in the system piping is not anticipated at Salem Unit No. 1.
We appreciate your assistance in this review and consider this matter r-esolved.
