Docket No. 50-311 APR 2 3 1979 Mr. R. L. Mittl, General Manaqer Licensing and Environment Engineering and Construction Department

  • Public Service Electric and Gas Company 80 Pa,rk Place

Dear Mr. Mittl:

'SIJB.JECT:. SALEM NUCLEAR GENERATING STATION, UNIT NO. 2 STEAM GENERATOR

  • CHANNELHE.t\\D CRACKING In your letter dated March 30, 1979 regarding the Salem Unit 2 st~am generators~ you stated that periodic penetrant tests performed on Unit 2 steam generator channelhead cladding exhibited increasingly numerous crack indications.* You proposed that the condition of Unit 2
  • steam generator cha1inel head cladding during service be inferred by using the results from periodic ultrasonic examinations that are to be performed to monitor cracking in the Unit 1 steam generator channelhead cladding.

We have evaluated your propos~l and have determined that it is unacceptable because the crack indications of Unit 2 channelheads have increased in severity and extent during precritical operation.

We require* that you demonstrate the integrity of the channel heads of* Unit 2 by monitoring the cracks in Unit 2. This will provide more val id information on the condition of the Unit 2 channel heads, which may not have been manufactured*

entirely similar to those of Unit 1. Furthermore, the imperfections monitored by inspecting Unit 2 would be more responsive to the effects of the Unit 2 environment.
