Subject:
DISCHARGE OF EMPLOYEE On Apri I 13, 1978, a painter foreman employed by one of the licensee 1s contractors made statements about alleged poor quality work in the con-tainment liner.
Those statements were made jointly to licensee personnel and an NRC inspector. The work involved had not yet been inspected for completion by the licensee.
The licensee took corrective action regarding deficiencies which were confirmed.
During a subsequent inspection on May 10, 1978, the licensee in the presence of the foreman informed the.NRC inspector of instructions which had been given regarding cleaning prior to painting certain areas.
The painter foreman, speakihg jointly to the licensee and the NRC inspector, stated that those instructions had not been given.
The licensee stated that the foreman was not correct.
Personnel performing the cleaning work were observed by the NRC inspector to be accomplishing the work as described by the licensee to the NRC inspector.
The painter foreman was discharged on May 12, 1978, for allegedly making false statements.
This Preliminary Notification is provided for information only.
Media interest is expected because of the controversy involved.
The fact that the man was discharged after talking with an NRC inspector
~ould be included.
The State of New Jersey has been informed.
A press release is not planned by the NRC nor the licensee.
NRC, Region I, (Philadelphia) received notification of this occurrence*
from an inspector onsite at 1:00 p.m. on May 12, 1978.
