Mr. Gerald B. Slade General Manager Palisades Nuclear Generating Plant 27780 Blue Star Memorial Highway Covert, MI 49043-9530

Dear Mr. Slade:

SEP 2 9 1993

SUBJECT:

DOCUMENTATION REQUEST TO SUPPORT THE PALISADES NUCLEAR GENERATING PLANT SERVICE WATER SYSTEM OPERATIONAL PERFORMANCE INSPECTION I would like to inform you that the NRC will perform a service water system operational performance inspection (SWSOPI) at the Palisades Nuclear Generating Plant.

The inspection's onsite activities are scheduled for the weeks of January 24 and February 7, 1994.

The inspection will assess design, operation, maintenance, surveillance, and quality assurance and corrective acttoris associated with the Palisades service water system.. The team will also assess your actions in response to Generic Letter (GL)' 89-13, "Service Water System Problems Affecting Safety Related Equipment."

To accomplish its objectives, the SWSOPI team will review a broad range of information and activities for the service water system. Attachment 1 lists items which the team expects to review.

The list is being provided to allow you to anticipate the team's informational needs.

I request your assistarice in making this information available for review during the January 10-14, 1994, pre-inspection site visit.

Region III has found system overview presentations an effective way for the NRC and the licensee to exchange relevant inspection information.

To this end, I request your assistance in providing an informal presentation during the pre-inspection visit describing the service water system's design and operation, significant system modifications, GL 89-13 actions, and a system problem history.

In addition to the presentation, the team would like a general plant and SWS specific tour during the trip.

If you have any questions regarding Attachment I or the inspe~tion itself, please contact Ms. Sonia Burgess (708/790-5149) of my staff.
