General Offices: 212 West Michigan Avenue, Jackson, Michigan 49201 * (617) 788-0660 September 9, 1980 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation Att Mr Dennis M Crutchfield, Chief Operating Reactors Branch No-5 U S Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 DOCKET 50-255. - LICENSE DPR PALISADES PLANT - FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS - REVISED DESCRIPTION OF REACTOR COOLANT PUMP OIL LEAK COLLECTION SYSTEM Consumers Power.Company letter dated May 2, 1980~ submitted for NRC review a description of the reactor coolant pump oil leak collection system installed at Palisades.. This system is being installed to alleviate fire protection concerns as required by Amendment 42 to License DPR-20.

The de?cription of this system contained in our r>'!..ay 2, 1980, letter was incorrect in some areas.

This letter corrects the errors in our previous description.

As described in our May 2,' 1980, letter, the oil leak collection system includes a gutter encircling the motor approximately mid-way on the casing.

The collection system also addresses leakage collecting on the lower bearing bracket (referred to as. the lower collection plate in our May~2, 1980, letter).

Oil collected in these locations is routed to the collection tank as shown in the sketch attached to our May 2, 1980, letter.

Collect.ion tank design and installation is also as previous-ly described.

Our May 2; 1980, letter incorrectly stated that oil leakage from all components spe_cified in Palisades' Fire Protection Safety Evalua~ion R'eport would be collect-ed by these two collectors.. In fact, *upper bearing drain and fill plugs and sight glasses are located where some potential oil leakage might not drain on or withiri the motor casing; additional drip pans will be installed *to collect such leakage and*direct it into the collectors described previously or directly to the collect-

'ion tank.

In addition, *the lower bearing and its oil reservoir are located below.. ______ _

t-he -lower b-ear1ng bracRet; -IeaK'age -from -the-se-conrpone-nts and -the rel~-.t~-d-fu=~i-n -~~d fill plugs and sight glass would not be collected by the system previously describ-ed.

A drip pan will be installed to collect any leakage from these components and carry it to the collection tank.

As a final addition to the information provided

. in our May 2, 1980, letter, oil level indication is available in the control room for each reservoir in addition to the level alarms previously described.

. \\p Installation of the oil leak collection system as described in our May 2, 1980, !\\.,&>

letter has been completed.

The additional drip pans and drain lines discussed ~'7 \\b above represent additions to this system to correct design omissions.

2 additions will be completed before November 1, 1980.

With these n+odifications, the system will collect oil leakage from all of the oil system components speci-fied in the Safety Evaluation Report.
