consumers Power company General Offices: 212 West Michigan Avenue, Jackson, Michigan 49201 * (517) 788-0650 May 2, 1980 Director, Nuclear Reactor Regulation Att Mr Dennis M Crutchfield, Chief Operating Projects Branch No 5 US Nuclear Regulatory Commission Washington, DC 20555 DOCKET 50-255 - LICENSE DPR PALISADES PLANT - FIRE PROTECTION MODIFICATIONS - DESCRIPTION OF REACTOR COOLANT PUMP OIL LEAK COLLECTION SYSTEM 8 0 050 6 0 I lb~

Amendment 42 to License DPR-20 required th.at several modifications be made at Palisades to enhance fire protection capabilities.

Additional design details were to be submitted to NRC for certain modifications as specified in the Safety Evaluation Report (SER) accompanying Amendment 42.

One modification for which additional information was required was SER item 3.1.15, Reactor Coolant Pump Oil Collection System.

This letter provides the required infor-mation on item 3.1.15.

Oil leakage from each primary coolant pump motor is collected by means of a gutter encircling the motor approximately mid-way on the casing and by a plate covering the bottom of the motor.

Oil collected at either location is routed to a collection tank by 1/2 inch stainless steel tubing.

Each collection tank has a capacity of ten gallons, is mounted to poured concrete walls near the pump pedestal (this represents a change from the drawings attached), and is equipped with a level switch which will alarm in the control room when the tank contains two gallons.

A sketch of the collection system is attached along with drawings detailing the collection tank.

The tank installation has been analyzed to show that the tank attachment will accommodate safety shutdown earthquake accelerations without failure; the level switch and drain tubing have not been designed to function during or a~er such an event.

The upper bearing lubricating oil coolers, drain and fill plugs and sight glasses are located directly above the pump motor casing.

Leakage from these components would flow down over the outside of the casing or through the winding and rotor areas to be collected in the gutter or lower collection plate.

The lower bearing and its oil reservoir are located above the lower collection plate; the cooler for lower bearing lubricating oil is located within the reservoir.

The only flanged connections in the oil system are at the upper bearing oil coolers; teflon gaskets are used and no leakage has ever been experienced.

.v Fire Protection Modifications Palisades Plant May 2, 1980 Leakage of oil from either reservoir would be detected by the level switch in the collection tank.

In addition, each reservoir contains a level switch which provides a control room alarm in the event of either high or low oil level.
